Bayern Munich playmaker Franck Ribery may miss the start of the Bundesliga season. A second examination of his injured ankle revealed the damage was worse than first feared.
Ribery claimed to have been "fortunate" that his left ankle appeared to be just sprained, but a second visit to Bayern chief medical officer Dr Hans-Wilhelm Muller-Wohlfahrt this morning confirmed ligament damage.
The 28-year-old will have to wear a cast for five days before the joint is checked once more.
Ribery, whose 2010/11 season was disrupted by frequent injuries, was dismayed at the news.
He told www.bild.de: "The injury is worse than we thought yesterday. I don't know why these things always happen to me.”
"I need to wear a cast for five days and then, hopefully, be able to start running again from Monday."
The Frenchman sustained the injury at the club's Sabener Strasse training facility yesterday morning.
Bayern's first competitive game of the season is on August 1 against Eintracht Braunschweig. They open their Bundesliga season at home to Borussia Monchengladbach on August 7.
