Patrick Vieira hangs up his boots

Former French International and World Cup winner Patrick Vieira has announced his retirement from professional football.

He will take up a new role as Football development Executive off the pitch with Manchester City.

The 35-year-old Frenchman was released by City at the end of last season and he has accepted the position of football development executive and will help in the growth of young players among other responsibilities.

Vieira said: "This role is a fantastic new challenge for me and I am very grateful to Manchester City for offering me this opportunity.

"I have a lot to learn about the non-playing areas of the business but there are many very experienced people here for me to learn from and I am confident that I can make a significant contribution to the club's ongoing success."

Vieira was City boss Roberto Mancini's first signing when he left Inter Milan to return to the Barclays Premier League in January 2010.

He was not a regular starter but made 47 appearances in total and netted six goals, with his final run-out in a City shirt coming as a late substitute in the FA Cup final victory over Stoke in May.

The Frenchman added: "I am particularly pleased to be given the opportunity to work with the club's community scheme.

"Manchester City has a great reputation for its commitment to its community and charity partners and I believe I can help to take that message to an even greater audience.

"Everyone at Manchester City - the fans, the staff and the players - have made me and my family feel very welcome here over the past two years and I am very happy to have been given the chance to stay and develop my career away from the pitch."

Vieira came to limelight when he joined Arsenal from AC Milan in 1996 and he went on to enjoy huge success in nine seasons with the Gunners.

The belligerent midfielder won three Premier League titles and was part of the 'Invincibles' Arsenal team that did not lose a match in the 2003-04 season.

He became club captain following Tony Adam's retirement in 2002 and also won four FA Cups. Vieira was also a controversial figure who collected cards to go with his medals and he was sent off 10 times in Arsenal colours.

He left the Gunners to join Juventus and won the Serie A title in 2006, although the Turin side was then stripped of the trophy amid the Serie A match-fixing scandal and the Frenchman moved on again to Inter Milan.

In a hugely flourishing spell, Inter won the league for four consecutive years but Vieira found himself increasingly troubled by injuries and departed for Manchester before the Italians' Champions League triumph in 2010.

On the international stage, the Frenchman was a key part of the team that won the European Championships in 2000 and also made a substitute appearance in France's World Cup final victory over Brazil.

Vieira will report to City's chief football operations administrator Brian Marwood, who described him as the "ultimate professional".

Marwood said: "His experience in the world of football is virtually unparalleled and he will be a huge asset to our club as old and young alike benefit from his knowledge.

"His contribution to world football during his time as a player was extraordinary and he will be remembered as one of the greatest players to grace the Premier League.

"Whilst it is sad to see Patrick's playing career come to an end, we are delighted that he has chosen to extend his time with Manchester City in this new capacity.

"Wherever he goes he commands the respect of his audience and we believe he will make an invaluable contribution to our club as we build on our recent successes."

United started their Pre-Season with a thumping Victory

Manchester United opened their five-match Pre-season United States tour with a comfortable 4-1 win over New England Revolution in Boston.

Michael Owen set United on their way five minutes after the break, with teenager Federico Macheda adding two more.

Macheda added a second five minutes later, although the hosts responded immediately as they capitalised on being awarded a dubious free-kick when Benny Feilhaber's shot deflected in off Kenny Mansally.

Another tidy finish from Macheda made the score line 3-1, who scored zero goals in 14 appearances on loan with Sampdoria last season.

After a tortuous summer in his personal life, veteran Ryan Giggs received a warm reception upon his arrival and it was his pass that provided United with a fourth, for Park Ji-sung. It was a sublime chip by the South Korean.

England international Ashley Young made his debut for the Red Devils and manager Sir Alex said” He(Young) showed tonight he's a fantastic crosser of the ball. I think he hit three fantastic crosses in the game, which maybe isn't something we're used to with the way we play. But if we do get used to it then there's goals there. I was very satisfied.”

Fergi also praised 19 year old Striker "Macheda's finishes were first class,He is special. At 19 years of age, we still have great hopes for him."

Wesley Sneijder agrees terms for United move

Manchester United look set to complete the £35million transfer of Inter Milan playmaker Wesley Sneijder after he agreed terms of around £190,000-a-week.

The Daily Mail has reported that the Barclays Premier League champions moved closer to securing the signature of the Holland international after the 27-year-old reached an agreement over his wages.

Sneijder initially demanded salary of £250,000-a-week, but has reportedly settled for £190,000-a-week after negotiations. The deal is said to be close to completion.

United Chief executive David Gill met Inter Milan executives at a meeting of the European Club Association while the rest of the team continues their pre-season tour in America.

Gill is reportedly have made an unofficial £35million offer and will follow it up with an official bid before this weekend. Inter are said to be reluctant to sell their star midfielder but the offer has seemingly proved too good for them to turn down.

Sir Alex Ferguson is keen to strengthen the United midfield following release of Owen Hargreaves and the retirement of Paul Scholes.

If the deal goes through, Sneijder's arrival will take the Red Devil's summer transfer spending past the £80million mark, as he follows AtleticosDavid de Gea, BlackburnsPhil Jones and Aston villasAshley Young into the Theatre of Dreams.

Napoli sign Mario Santana

Napoli have signed Argentinian forwardMario Alberto Santana.

Santana has joined the Naples outfit as a free agent after leaving Fiorentina last month.

The 29-year-old has signed a three-year contract with Walter Mazzarri's side.

Santana becomes Napoli's third signing in a week following the arrival of Swiss midfielder Gokhan Inler from Udinese and Uruguay centre-back Miguel Angel Britos from Bologna.

Marica leaves Stuttgart

Romania striker Ciprian Marica has left German side Stuttgart after having the final year of his contract cancelled.

The 25-year-old's deal was due to expire next June. But it was terminated by mutual consent, the German Bundesliga club announced.

"We wish Ciprian all the best for the future," sporting director Fredi Bobic said on the club's official website.

Marica joined Stuttgart from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2007.

Jennings seals Bayern move

Tranmere have confirmed that forward Dale Jennings has completed his move to Bayern Munich.

The 18 year-old moved for an undisclosed fee having made his League One debut last season.

Tranmere boss Les Parry said: "This is an amazing opportunity for Dale and one which any young player would jump at.

"Bayern Munich made us a very good offer for Dale and we're happy for him to progress his career with them in Germany. He has had an incredible 12 months with us now and hopefully he'll go on to do great things with Bayern."

It has been reported that Bayern discovered a hip problem during Jennings' medical but that the club were happy to carry on nonetheless.

The Liverpool Echo reports that the deal is worth an initial £600,000 but could rise to £1.7 million depending on his success.

Bojinov signs Sporting Lisbon

Bulgaria striker Valeri Bojinov has joined Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon on a five-year contract from Parma.

Bojinov made the permanent move to Parma last summer after an initial loan from Manchester City. He will wear the number seven shirt for his new club.

"If the fans, the players and the club all stand together, then we will turn in some good results," the 25-year-old said. "Sporting has given me the chance to join a group that is going to get this club winning again.

"I will give my all in every game and I am sure that Sporting is going to play to win."

Sporting finished third in the Portuguese Liga last term - 36 points behind champions Porto. Midfielder Jaime Valdes has been loaned to Parma for the 2011-12 season as part of the deal.
